Student Code of Conduct

Colonial Expectations for Student Dress
The Student Code of Conduct, states the dress and grooming of students shall contribute to the health and safety of the individual and shall not disrupt the orderly educational process. Guidelines will be in effect throughout all of the Colonial School District schools to assure appropriate student dress while promoting an orderly educational environment. Students are expected to adhere to personal cleanliness, neatness, and proper standards of dress and appearance. Dress and grooming that interferes with the educational process by drawing excessive attention will not be permitted. The following expectations are to be followed:

  • Mesh shirts, through which you can easily see, tank top shirts, tube tops, bare backs or midriffs, and short shorts are not appropriate.
  • Headwear, (hats, scarves, bandanas, caps, etc.) and sunglasses must not be worn in school.
  • Decals, slogans or sayings on clothing that contain reference to illegal or immoral behaviors or any type of profanity and/or racial slurs are not to be worn.
  • Appropriate safe shoes are to be worn at all times for appropriate school activities. Slippers and “Heelys” shoes are not permitted. When attending a grade level school where recess is scheduled, appropriate shoes include sneakers or low heeled, not high heeled, platform shoes, strapless or open toe shoes.
  • Shorts, skirts and dresses are to be of fingertip length and shirts are to have at least one-inch wide straps, no “spaghetti strap” shirts are permitted. Cleavage should be covered. Pants are to be worn around the waist. If there are any religious practices that involve student dress, we ask that you submit documentation to the school’s principal, as soon as possible, for his/her approval.

 

Media Opt Out

Great things happen in Colonial Nation every day! In order to get the word out about positive things that are going on in our district, and tell our story we often spotlight students during classroom activities on our website, school and district Facebook Pages, E-newsletters, Instagram, and Twitter.
In addition, district officials appreciate the opportunity to photograph, quote, and/or videotape our students for use in promotional or training/education materials. There are also occasions when TV, radio, and/or newspaper reporters interview or photograph students at a teacher's or administrator's discretion regarding an activity or program.   

  • If you DO NOT wish to have your child’s photo used in this way, please download, sign and return the opt-out form.  Once this is filled out and returned to the office, your child’s teachers will be notified.  
  • If this Opt-Out form is NOT returned, it will be assumed that you are giving permission for your child to be photographed and/or interviewed at a teacher or administrator’s discretion. 

 

Handwashing and Hand Sanitizer Use

Colonial School District is committed to promoting healthy hand-hygiene practices in our schools. Students and staff are provided with regular opportunities to wash their hands with soap and water, particularly at important times such as:

  • After using the restroom

  • Before eating lunch

  • After outdoor activities

  • After coughing, sneezing, or blowing their nose

When soap and water are not readily available, hand sanitizer may be provided. Hand sanitizers used in our schools contain at least 60% ethanol or 70% isopropyl alcohol, in accordance with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hand sanitizer may be available in classrooms, cafeterias, gyms and near frequently touched surfaces or shared equipment.

Under the Delaware Department of Education’s Emergency Order regarding Regulation 817, Medications and Treatments, parent or guardian permission is not required for a student to use hand sanitizer.

Parents and guardians may contact their child’s school if:

  • They do not want their child to use hand sanitizer

  • Their child needs assistance using hand sanitizer safely

  • Their child has a sensitivity, allergy or other concern related to hand-sanitizer use

School staff will continue to encourage safe and appropriate handwashing and hand-sanitizer practices throughout the school day.
